Today more than ever, campsites are facing the challenge of reinventing themselves: Glamping instead of standard pitches, digital guest journeys instead of paper forms, new target groups with high expectations instead of just permanent campers and regular guests from the past. The Steinplatte campsite in Tyrol was facing precisely this change. We spoke to Marco Höglinger, a concept developer and consultant in the hospitality industry, who accompanied the transformation of the Steinplatte campsite in Tyrol.
Marco, how did you come to be involved in Camping Steinplatte in the first place?
Marco: I was brought on board because a fundamental transformation of the campsite was planned - a central theme here was 'glamping'.
My role was to demonstrate and realize the possibilities in terms of glamping. This resulted in the sub-project 'Camp Waidring' with boutique tents, cabins and cool apartments. At the same time, it was clear: if we are going into the future, we also need digitalization. So both topics - glamping and digitalization - came together.
So it wasn't primarily about introducing a new PMS. That was more of a 'side effect' of the reorganization.
Why exactly Booking Experts? What was the deciding factor?
Marco: I looked at many systems, such as Mews, Apaleo and other hotel PMSs. But for vacation park structures with glamping, apartments and the need for many interfaces, it quickly became clear that these systems did not match our requirements.
Booking Experts understands the industry and is made for vacation parks. With interfaces to various service providers, it was the only solution that suited our structure.
I came across you through internet research, later I got in touch with you at ITB Berlin, then I spoke to you directly.
Camping Steinplatte is focussing on extended accommodation: Retro caravans, cabins and boutique tents will appeal to new target groups.
What ultimately strengthened your trust in BookingExperts?
Marco: Your platform was already technically very convincing - but the people and strategy behind it are also crucial. When it became clear that you were building a German-speaking team and focusing specifically on the DACH market, that was a strong signal for us and cleared the way.
Ultimately, we switched to Booking Experts at the same time as Ferienparadies Natterer See (also a campsite in Tyrol). This showed us that we are part of a future-oriented movement in the Austrian industry and gave us additional encouragement.
What was the initial situation at the campsite?
Marco: Before the takeover by the current owners, everything ran on Excel. Bookings were made by phone or email. A simple management tool was then introduced, with the option of online booking and online payment. This worked, but soon reached its limits - especially when it came to reporting.
A lot was paper-based and there were no interfaces to Feratel (reporting solution in Austria). That was precisely my focus: is there a system that offers a Feratel connection and enables pre-check-in? In the end, that was my main argument for Booking Experts.
What does the switch mean for day-to-day operations?
Marco: Automated processes for bookings, payments and reporting are a huge relief for the team. And what we really notice: Guests are embracing digital processes. In the past, many bookings were made by phone or email - today, 90 - 95 % of bookings are processed entirely online via Booking Experts.
What role does customer support play for you?
Marco: A big role! Especially in the onboarding phase and also in day-to-day business, you need reliable, fast support. And we get that with you - whether by chat, phone or email.
That wasn't the case with the previous provider. You received a ticket there and never heard anything again. That's a no-go for a running business.
Are there other digitalization goals?
Marco: Yes, we want to automate electricity meter readings, introduce access systems such as ID recognition for barriers and integrate door locking systems for glamping units.
This is exactly where Booking Experts is strong, because you function as a platform with your app store and many partners are connected.
What did you enjoy most about the project?
Marco: The combination of innovation and reality. I come from the world of digitalization and it was exciting to see how you can create new worlds of experience on a campsite.
Glamping appeals to new target groups who expect a different guest journey. Book digitally, pay online, start your vacation straight away.
Many guests have said: "We're not typical campers, but that was cool." Then you know: We did it right.
Would you see the project as a pioneer?
Marco: Definitely. The Steinplatte project is a beacon for the outdoor hospitality industry. New types of accommodation, digital guest experience, modern target groups - that's the future. And Booking Experts was a central part of this journey.
Camping Steinplatte shows what modern outdoor tourism can look like today. Together with Booking Experts, an innovative setup was created that sets new standards in the industry.
